The Sports Information Director coordinates media relations for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is not a HEERA Manager and does not have authority under HEERA. The incumbent writes, edits and distributes media releases to various outlets; establishes relationships with on-campus and local media; arranges and coordinates all media interviews for student-athletes, coaches, and staff; provides media relations training for student-athletes, coaches, and staff; prepares media notes and postseason summaries and coordinates the sharing of content with the university’s Public Affairs office to ensure campus-wide publicity for Intercollegiate Athletics. The incumbent oversees and updates the department’s athletic website on a daily basis with game previews, competition recaps and unique feature stories; serves as the senior editor of BroncoAthletics.com and designs and coordinates the posting of website advertisements and promotional graphics. The incumbent serves as the statistician for all sports; coordinates game day statistical operations and statistical reporting to numerous outlets; reports statistics as required to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA); maintains all archived statistical materials on sports and individuals and coordinates the department’s Hall of Fame nomination and selection process. The incumbent coordinates the department’s social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat while designing content for distribution and provides social media training for student-athletes, coaches, and staff. The incumbent creates, publishes and distributes online media guides, brochures, department newsletters, and sport and departmental material on a timely basis; designs, writes and edits gameday programs for each home athletic event; coordinates and publishes sports schedule cards and produces video content for BroncoAthletics.com and coordinates all live broadcast for soccer, volleyball, basketball and baseball. The incumbent manges game management for all home athletic events, including scheduling and supervision of game staff (scorekeeper, scoreboard operator, shot clock operator, announcer, computer statistician, game set-up, tickets, concessions); provide training for game management staff; coordinates the administration and nomination for all academic and athletic awards and honors for CCAA, regional and national recognition; travels with teams in CCAA and NCAA postseason competition; travels to attend annual CCAA meeting and attends athletic department staff meetings and performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree, CA Drivers License and insurance AND 2 years of related professional experience is required. Knowledge and proficiency in athletics based statistical programs. Proficient in social media platforms; working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in the public affairs, media, marketing, and/or sports information areas; thorough knowledge of and ability to use effective media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events; ability to build and manage more sophisticated media contacts; demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage; working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media; thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals; ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles; strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills; knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages; working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences; ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to research or sports information; exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills; and ability to provide lead work direction.
Two years of experience in collegiate sports information and Desktop publishing is preferred.
