The Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls, SD has an immediate opening for a FT Technical Manager/Head Carpenter. We are a leading arts presenter in the region. This position manages all backstage and technical needs of this multi-use facility including support of Pavilion presented shows, community and commercially presented performances and events. The primary performance venues in the facility are the 1881-seat Mary W Sommervold Hall and the 291 seat Belbas Theater, both part of the Husby Performing Arts Center. This position will also collaborate with events and exhibitions in the Kirby Science Discovery Center and The Visual Arts Center. I. Basic Function
Responsible for the supervision, scheduling and coordination of the house crew, including any additional members of stagehands from all outside resources. Other duties include developing accurate labor costs projections with budget adherence, establishing and implementing maintenance and safety guidelines and establishing departmental budget lines coupled with spending. The Technical Manager administers any labor contract as to daily usage and long-term effect. Take responsibility for the maintenance, safety, and replacement of technical equipment. Schedule and develop the load-in, build, run and restore of all productions.
II. Organizational Relationships
•Responsible to the Director, Husby Performing Arts Center for the successful performance of assigned responsibilities.
•Responsible for the direct supervision of all Technical Staff and Stagehands (FT and PT).
•Collaborate with other Management Staff to ensure the success of all productions and events.
III. Specific Duties and Responsibilities
•Responsible for managing the backstage and technical areas of the Husby Performing Arts Center; including the Mary W. Sommervold Hall, Belbas Theater, and the Schulte Room.
•Serve as primary technical contact on site for all touring presentations to ensure successful engagements.
•Coordinate and supervise FT in-house crew, PT stagehands and other technicians; including those not in the direct employment of the facility, engaged in producing a stage or non-stage production, in varying degrees of interaction, possibly from concept to production. This includes determining priorities of event coordination; hanging of soft goods, electric, sound, supplemental rental equipment and building modification.
•Advance preparation prior to each production, establish the number of stagehands, time and material required to stage various events and schedule same.
•Oversee the regular maintenance and repair of all theater equipment and systems. Participate in the planning and implementation of new equipment purchases and facility upgrades.
•Prepare financial reports regarding stage personnel and budget for management and finance team.
•Protect and keep secure equipment, hard and soft goods, and facility surfaces.
•Supervise outside technical staff who use WPMI equipment. Ensure safe proper use, provide basic training if needed.
•Determine additional equipment needs for facility users and provide quotes if rented/purchased through WPMI.
•Perform related duties as assigned, including filling in for FT in-house crew members when workload or scheduling requires such.
•Responsible for set up of various front-of-house activities including bars, pre-performance events, and merchandise tables; plus non-performance events like receptions and meetings.
•Be the overall safety manager for the performing arts spaces leading by example and taking a proactive approach to all work safety issues.
•Promote continuous training by maintaining a working teaching environment for all technical and non-technical departments to continue to grow the staff base.
•Other duties as assigned.
4+ years of proven, direct supervisory experience.
Thorough knowledge of stagehand contracts, wage scale, practices and techniques.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Working knowledge of standard tools and equipment of the trade.
Basic knowledge of concert line array systems, and sound design and techniques used in concert production.
Basic knowledge of lighting equipment including conventional, LED and moving lights, and design techniques.
Basic knowledge of rigging and flymanship.
Understanding of technical riders and orchestral drawings.
Ability to coordinate all the components in presenting major theatrical productions.
Physical ability and willingness to work long hours when needed, including but not limited to days, nights, weekends and holidays.
Physical ability to move throughout the entirety of the Washington Pavilion building, stand for long periods of time, climb stairs frequently, bend, reach, and lift up to 60 pounds.
Museum, performing arts, non-profit organizations, or facilities management experience deemed a plus.
Must have positive attitude, tolerance of diversity, and a respect for artists and clients.
Must have solid computer skills including Microsoft Office programs and Vector Works or equivalent.
