The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) seeks a visionary leader who is innovative, engaged and experienced to direct their NCAA Division 1 athletic department. A member of the Western Athletic Conference, UMKC competes in 16 intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports which include soccer, volleyball, track and field/cross country, basketball, golf, tennis and softball. The Director of Athletics is responsible for leading, managing and directing the athletic budget, personnel, strategic planning, fundraising, marketing, media contract negotiations, sports facilities and the overall management of the athletic programs.
Successful candidates will develop and promote a program of academic, social and competitive success that reflects the core values of UMKC. The Director of Athletics reports to the Chancellor of the University. Position Duties and Responsibilities:
•Oversee the administration of intercollegiate athletics while maintaining accountability for its design, operation and evaluation; ensure compliance with institutional, Western Athletic Conference and NCAA guidelines and requirements, as well as System, state and federal regulations.
•Ensure budgetary and fiscal accountability of the athletic department in order to adhere to a balanced budget through enhancing revenue generation and monitoring spending.
•Provide visionary leadership and role modeling for sustaining a culture of transparency, professionalism, integrity and respect at all levels.
•Set conditions and promote an environment that fosters each student-athlete’s health and welfare, academic and athletic achievement, and overall growth and development.
•Develop a clear vision that will ensure the athletic department has a competitive advantage in fundraising, facilities development and in the recruitment, retention and promotion of student-athletes and athletic personnel.
•Lead the development of athletics fundraising goals and work in close coordination with university development and advancement to develop fundraising strategies to meet strategic priorities. Regularly meet with donors, prospective donors, corporate partners, community members and institutional community members as part of ongoing communication, awareness and fundraising activities. Further, regularly promote the athletics program and UMKC internally and externally throughout the University community, greater Kansas City communities, State and surrounding region.
•Develop strategic marketing to increase visibility, exposure and season ticket sales for all sports.
•Encourage the professional development of the staff and coaches, promote their accomplishments and perpetuate a culture of positive morale and effective interdepartmental relationships.
•Be a positive presence in the community among individuals, organizations and corporations via participation in both internal and external events, various media activities and institutional and community events.
•Participate actively in conference and NCAA meetings and activities.
