PDX Jazz, a 501(c)(3) cultural arts non-profit and the leading jazz presenting organization of Portland, Oregon, is seeking an experienced, innovative and forward-thinking artistic leader to guide musical programming at an exciting stage of organizational development. The Artistic Director (AD) will shape artistic programming in a manner that appeals to and attracts a broad and diverse audience. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic artistic leader who, in tandem with the Executive Director, will set the artistic vision and strategy for the organization.
The Artistic Director (AD) reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for programming acclaimed and emerging international, national and local talent across PDX Jazz productions. With a focus on artistic programming, the AD will ensure that PDX Jazz has timely and accurate knowledge regarding music industry trends and activities and will possess an expert command of event management/production, strong relationships with talent agents/managers, solid business acumen, savvy negotiating skills, and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. In collaboration with the Executive Director, the Artistic Director participates in major decisions about the ongoing development and delivery of the organization’s mission, values and activities, with input from PDX Jazz staff, key stakeholders, and the community. The AD is an Independent Contractor position.

Design a progressive and sustainable artistic programming model, achieving artistic merit, audience engagement and financial performance goals.
Identify, schedule and book musicians. Manage relations on behalf of PDX Jazz with artists, artist managers and talent agents.
Negotiate and administer artist contracts including fulfillment of technical and hospitality riders.
Secure marketing and publicity assets for each contracted artist, ensure all required artist approval(s) of marketing collateral.
Consult the Executive Director on financial elements pertaining to artistic programming including allocated budget management, artist offers, venue scaling/ticket pricing and settlements.
Collaborate with the Executive Director and staff to formulate comprehensive marketing strategies for PDX Jazz productions.
Collaborate with the Event Operations Manager in advancing PDX Jazz productions.
Collaborate with the Event Production Manager in facilitating technical and stage management activities for PDX Jazz productions.
Represent PDX Jazz at industry conferences/events. Build positive relationships on behalf of PDX Jazz with artists, artist managers, talent agents and jazz presenting organizations.
Minimum of 7 years’ experience programming musical talent, jazz genre experience required.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience programming a multi-venue/multi-day event.
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
Ability to work irregular hours (weekends/evenings) as necessary.
AD will be required to be physically present in Portland, Oregon as requested by the Executive Director.
Familiarity with the Portland, Oregon market.
Residency in Portland, Oregon is desired, but not required.
