The City of Madison is searching for a dynamic leader to direct the programs, functions and staff of the City of Madison's Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. The Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center is a place where nearly a half a million people gather each year to share, learn, grow, plan, design, and connect with one another. From formal events like conventions and conferences to public events like Dane Dances, Monona Terrace has wide geographical draw attracting local, regional, state, and international events each year. This Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building is a treasured community asset that has far reaching economic, business and quality of life impacts. This facility is located in the heart of Madison's vibrant downtown on the shore of Lake Monona, two blocks from the State Capitol. It's spectacular multi-level structure features public promenades, meeting rooms with striking lake views, and the attached 240-room Hilton Madison Monona Terrace. In addition to 85,000 square feet of interior function space, gracing the rooftop are 68,000 square feet of gardens that may be reserved for events. Meeting/exhibition space includes a 40,000 square foot exhibit hall, a 14,000 square foot ballroom, 315 seat lecture hall and 20 additional meeting rooms totaling 28,000 square feet. This is responsible managerial and administrative work in developing, planning, organizing, and executing the diverse programs and operations of the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center. This role encompasses significant responsibilities for comprehensive facility operation(s), including sales/marketing and event management, tourism operations, community relations, community programming, fostering and maintaining intergovernmental cooperation, and fiscal and human resource planning and management. Work is performed with a high degree of judgment and discretion, under the general direction of the Mayor and the oversight of the Monona Terrace Board.
Three (3) years of senior management experience in a multi-faceted convention center or similar facility (incorporating a food service program) overseeing a variety of the following responsibilities: planning and directing the operations; sales and marketing; event management; or fiscal and administration services.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Hospitality, Business Administration or a related field.
If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:
At least four (4) years experience in applying the following:
Principles, practices and procedures associated with the management, sales, administration, and operation of a public convention center complex.
Principles, techniques and practices of facility management, strategic planning, enterprise agency accounting and budgeting, Board governance, staffing, and long-range marketing efforts.
Full range of supervisory principles and practices, labor relations and personnel management.
Effective public relations and community involvement techniques.
At least two (2) years experience in applying the following:
Principles and techniques needed to establish and manage a first class internal and external customer service system and programs.
Related computer applications.
Marketing and sales planning strategies and practices.
Familiarity with the following:
Crowd control management.
Knowledge of food service operations.
Hospitality and tourism industries.
Yield management techniques to apply to managing a public facility.
Quality improvement programs and sustainability initiatives.
Additional Salary Information: Employment will be subject to a five-year employment contract negotiated by the Mayor and approved by the Common Council. A term of the contract requires residency in the City of Madison.
