The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) in University Unions within Student Life at the University of Michigan is a dynamic, student-focused department that serves all undergraduate and graduate students through student programs, student services, and student development. Through meaningful involvement, CCI creates transformative experiences, a vibrant community, and lifelong memories for University of Michigan students. CCI recognizes and supports over 1,500 student organizations through education, advising, advocacy and services. CCI also implements hundreds of social, educational, cultural, and recreational programs each year, focused on building community within and beyond University Unions’ facilities. CCI directly employs 14 regular staff and 80 student staff.
University Unions OverviewUniversity Unions is a self-funded auxiliary enterprise which serves the campus through its three historic unions (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), academic meeting and dining facility (Palmer Commons), Center for Campus Involvement (over 1,500 student organizations and hundreds of programs), and works in close partnership with Conferences & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community. Total budget volume for University Unions approximates $20 million. University Unions directly employs over 80 regular staff and 250 student staff.

The Assistant Director for Campus Resources and Major Events provides functional leadership in the Center for Campus Involvement, a department within University Unions, to ensure well-considered student and campus services with effective business models to meet client needs. Manage and advise student organization, department, and non-University events in U-M’s major performance venues. Directly supervise 3 full-time staff in the Michigan Union Ticket Office, Student Organization Resource Center, and Student Theatre Arts Complex; indirectly supervise 1 full-time employee and 40 total undergraduate student employees. Develop budgets and achieve financial expectations for areas of responsibility.
Leadership of Functional Area (35%)
Provide strategic, future-thinking leadership to the Campus Resources team within the Center for Campus Involvement.
Provide management assistance to the CCI Director/UU Associate Director for functional areas of Major Events, Michigan Union Ticket Office, Student Organization Resource Center, and Student Theater Arts Complex.
Hire, train, and supervise full-time staff, graduate interns, and/or undergraduate student employees who work collaboratively to build community and create student life on campus.
Work collaboratively with CCI and UU staff to provide a well-considered plan for building an inclusive community through organizations and programs across campus.
Analyze, evaluate, and determine various business decisions within the scope of responsibilities.
Assess student and staff needs in order to ensure program and department goals and learning outcomes.
Direct responsibility for Major Events and Student Life Entertainment Contracts.
Serve on the University Unions Management Team.
Financial Management (30%)
Develop budgets and achieve financial expectations for areas of responsibility.
Actively pursue scheduling concerts and shows by outside promoters to generate revenue.
Evaluate and implement revenue-generating opportunities to advance the mission of the organization.
Identify cost efficiencies for short and long term success.
Balance the auxiliary needs of generating revenue with being focused on students as primary stakeholders.
Coordinate the review and negotiation of performance contracts with booking agencies and promoters, including contract riders pertaining to all technical aspects of the show as well as ensure all contracts comply with all laws, University policy and music industry standards.
Serve as the Division of Student Life contact for professional speaker and performer contracts, and signature authority for agreements up to $1000.
Approve and manage employee payroll process.
Program Management (25%)
Manage and advise student organizations hosting events in major performance venues including Hill Auditorium (3500 seats), the Power Center for the Performing Arts (1300 seats), Rackham Auditorium (1000 seats), and Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre (620 seats).
Manage and facilitate major events in major campus venues hosted by U-M departments and non-university clients.
Design, plan and manage all technical and physical production aspects including the production schedule and coordinate the activities of all staff associated with show (technical supervisor, ushers, IATSE stagehands, etc.).
Negotiate the physical layout of production; supervise IATSE stagehands and exercise judgment in the implementation of safety laws (i.e., OSEH procedure) and building and public safety codes, while maintaining responsibility for the overall facility.
Lead strategic partnerships with University Productions, School of Music, Theater & Dance, University Musical Society, University and Development Events, and other key stakeholders and users of major performance venues.
